End of Watch
April 21, 1927
Patrol Inspector Thad Pippin was killed near Pelea, New Mexico, on April 21, 1927, in the evening during a gunfight with smugglers. A pack train was discovered in the mountains southwest of El Paso, Texas. The officers could not determine which trail the train would take and divided into two teams. Observing nothing, one team started down the mountain when they heard rapid shooting from the direction of the other trail, guarded by Officers Crossett and Pippin. They found Officer Crossett ,who was shot four times, and one Inspector went to telephone headquarters while the other Crossett and located the body of Officer Pippin which had fallen down an embankment after being shot and killed.
