James M. Carter

End of Watch

June 6, 1956

Early on June 6, 1956, Airplane Pilot Douglas C. Shute and Patrol Inspector James M. Carter were patrolling in a service Piper Sabercub with a ground unit north of Comstock, Texas, engaged in locating and following physical evidence left by a person. After locating the walkers and instructing them to go to the roadway, Agent Shute pulled up when the engine stalled at 450 feet. It struck the ground in vertical descent, the engine still operating at near cruising power with the wreckage contained in a circle the size of the wingspan. The engine was driven back into the cockpit, telescoping the cabin, and imprisoning Pilot Shute and Patrol Inspector Carter who were both killed.
